Burberry

Thomas Burberry opened a draper's shop in Basingstoke in 1856 and invented gabardine, a tightly woven weatherproof cloth, in 1879. The trench coat and the check that lined it are what the house is known for, and both still shape its bags: coated canvas in the house check, leather trim, and hardware borrowed from coat buckles and D-rings. Daniel Lee has been chief creative officer since 2022. Its bags are more often canvas and check than full leather, which is part of what distinguishes them in resale. The Pocket bag, introduced under Lee, and the TB bag built on the monogram are the current lines. Older shapes still turn over steadily — the Canterbury and Ashby totes, The Banner, the Macken and the Salisbury among them.
