Cartier has been a jeweller first since Louis-François Cartier took over his master's Paris workshop in 1847, and its leather goods have always been a smaller line beside the watches and high jewellery. That shows in how the bags are built: the motifs are lifted from jewellery rather than invented for leather, and the hardware is usually the point of the piece. The Panthère draws on the panther the house has used since the early twentieth century, and the Trinity on its three interlocking bands.
