Salvatore Ferragamo returned from California to Florence in 1927 and built the house on shoes, patenting constructions and lasts rather than following silhouettes. The bags came later and still carry the shoemaker's habits: firm calf held to shape, edges painted and burnished, and the grosgrain bow of the Vara shoe reused as a closure. Maximilian Davis has been creative director since 2022. The Vara line is the clearest example, taking the shoe's bow and metal ring onto flaps and top-handles, and it remains the most recognisable thing the house makes in leather. The Sofia is the structured top-handle beside it, the Wanda a rounder shoulder shape, and the Hug a softer knotted form. Older Florentine-made pieces turn up regularly among the listings.
