Thierry Hermès set up a harness workshop in Paris in 1837, and the house still builds bags the way it built tack: saddle-stitched by hand, one artisan to a bag. The saddle stitch uses a pair of needles and a single waxed thread, so a broken stitch does not run. Leathers are the vocabulary buyers learn — Togo, Epsom, Clemence, box calf — and they matter more to price than the silhouette does. Nadège Vanhée has led women's collections since 2014. The Birkin and Kelly are the reference bags, the Kelly named for Grace Kelly and the Birkin for Jane Birkin.
